Family Night – 10/24/14

Thursday nights in our house are typically set aside as “Family Nights.” All five of us eat dinner at the kitchen table together.1 After dinner, we usually do something else together as a family. We’ve had scavenger hunts, played board games, watched something special on TV as a family, etc. These nights are pretty good, because dinner is planned in advance, so when trying to figure out my calories for the day, I know what I can have for breakfast and lunch. As in yesterday’s post, though, sometimes plans don’t always work out the way that you mean.

Tastefully Simple Honey Teriyaki Sauce…the good stuff.

We had planned to have a chicken and vegetable stir fry for dinner last night, which I was looking forward to. We use Tastefully Simple’s Honey Teriyaki sauce for the stir fry, which gives it a touch of sweetness and spice. It’s pretty delicious. However, my wife emailed me late in the afternoon to let me know that dinner plans were changing. Her boss had a dinner party on Wednesday night, and had leftover pork ribs that she wanted to give us.2

Luckily, I hadn’t blown through my whole calorie budget, and I was able to sample the delicious ribs…and they were delicious. We also had baked chicken in bbq sauce that I made to go along with dinner. Then, we played Disney’s Beat the Parents for about an hour. We had a lot of laughs, especially when I had to imitate my youngest son, which I did by simply yelling “John Cena”3 over and over.

Footnotes

1. We don’t always eat together on other nights, because my wife’s schedule isn’t consistent, and we have a small kitchen table that is usually cluttered.
2. My wife works for a small endodontic practice, and her boss is very generous. They’ve let us use their Disney time share once, and have taken us out to dinner or invited us over for dinner on many occasions.
3. I have recently gotten my sons hooked on professional wrestling, and John Cena is my youngest’s favorite. He talks about him constantly.
