Accountability Post – 6/1/17

“Sameness is the mother of disgust, variety the cure.” – Petrarch

One of the things that I struggle with when losing weight is trying to find enough different things that I can eat while staying within my daily nutritional goals. I don’t want to eat the same things over and over, and I find myself doing that more than when I’m not paying attention to calories, etc.

I also have this struggle with exercise, especially when I start. I’ve spent the last 14 months getting out of the shape that I was in when I ran my first 5K in March of 2016, so now I can barely do anything that I was doing at the time. Right now, I feel like all I can do is walk (with the occasional few moments of jogging in the middle). Anything more strenuous makes me winded, and frustrates me.

These are challenges that need to be overcome in order to maintain the healthy lifestyle that I’m trying to build for myself.

Weigh In – Milestone Monday

“Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.” – Rose Kennedy

Mrs. Kennedy is right. Milestones aren’t how we should judge our lives, but they can be helpful when trying to reach a goal.

Today I reached one of my milestones. I weighed in this morning, and I am at 200 pounds. That represents a 25 pound loss since I started this journey approximately 6 weeks ago. I am hopeful that I will continue to be as successful as I have been recently, and that sooner rather than later, I will reach my goals.

“Half of being smart is knowing what you are dumb about.” – Solomon Short

One of the things that tracking my calories helps me realize is what I don’t know. For example: Monday night, I was watching television and there was a commercial for “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter.” Ostensibly, that commercial should have been an enticement for me to buy that product. It wasn’t however. All it made me want was the blueberry muffin that they were using the spread on. So on the way to work yesterday morning, I stopped at 7-Eleven and got a blueberry muffin and a small cup of french vanilla flavored “cappuccino”.

When I got to work, I went to MyFitnessPal and plugged in the calorie information before I ate it. The muffin had over 500 calories, and the coffee over 300. I was a little bit surprised, but it reinforced how important it is for me to know exactly what is that I’m eating. What I decided to do was only eat half the muffin. I’m glad that I had only gotten a small cup of coffee, because I usually go with the extra large 24 oz size. I was able to structure the rest of the day so that I didn’t go over my calorie goals, and came in under my goals on everything except fat.
