Accountability Post – 6/1/17

“Sameness is the mother of disgust, variety the cure.” – Petrarch

One of the things that I struggle with when losing weight is trying to find enough different things that I can eat while staying within my daily nutritional goals. I don’t want to eat the same things over and over, and I find myself doing that more than when I’m not paying attention to calories, etc.

I also have this struggle with exercise, especially when I start. I’ve spent the last 14 months getting out of the shape that I was in when I ran my first 5K in March of 2016, so now I can barely do anything that I was doing at the time. Right now, I feel like all I can do is walk (with the occasional few moments of jogging in the middle). Anything more strenuous makes me winded, and frustrates me.

These are challenges that need to be overcome in order to maintain the healthy lifestyle that I’m trying to build for myself.

Guess Who’s Back…Back Again

“I didn’t know you were planning a comeback.”
“I hate that word. It’s a return.” – Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond; Sunset Boulevard

2017 has begun. Yeah…almost 6 months ago.

Here I am, though, and I’m back at trying this weight loss gimmick. Unfortunately, I’ve ballooned way up, and I’ve set a new personal record for my weight. That’s not a good thing, obviously. So…we’re going to try this again.

It’s been about two years since I started my most successful weight loss journey, and I’m going to try and replicate that success. Starting today, I’m going off soda cold turkey, I’m going to try and cut way back on the fast food, and just try to fix the way I eat.

So, look back here on weekdays for my daily accountability and calorie diaries. I’m also considering starting a YouTube vlog to help myself…so look for that in the coming weeks.

Accountability – 12/1/16 (Perspective)

“The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.” – Douglas Adams; The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time

Douglas Adams is one of my favorite authors, and perspective is something I’ve had a hard time figuring out lately. As I stated earlier this week, the last time I tried to lose weight was extremely successful…until it wasn’t. I remember being pretty good about what I was eating, and exercising. So, the fact that I’m having a hard time getting started this time around has been frustrating so far.

I think that I’m only remembering the good stuff, though. I’m not really remembering the frustration of trying to get started for almost six months (October 2014 when I started this blog, through May 2015, when I started the meatless month experiment.) I ran a 5K eight months ago, and now, because of choices I’ve made, I can barely walk up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. I want to just jump back into running, but, of course, it doesn’t work that way. I’m trying to gain that perspective, and hopefully writing about it today will help…a little.

As for yesterday’s food diary, I did pretty well.

I woke up early and made myself some eggs and toast. I had a protein shake for a mid morning snack. Orange chicken and vegetables was my lunch selection, with granola for an afternoon snack. I finished the day at Pei Wei, where I had edamame and vegetable spring rolls. I didn’t get any exercise in, but I did play Madden 2017. That counts, right?

Pizza, man…

There’s no better feeling in the world than a warm pizza box on your lap. – Kevin James

Amen to that.

This is pretty much the same story as the last couple of weeks. We have something that I love, and I make the choice to eat more than I should. Last night, as you could probably figure out from the title of the post, it was pizza. I just couldn’t resist my favorite combination of toppings, pepperoni, sausage and green peppers.

As always, though, it’s not about how many times you fall, it’s about how many times you get up. Today will be a better day than yesterday, and I’ll make sure I make better choices. I did get back up from my setback with DDP Yoga on Monday. I got up this morning and did the “Energy” routine, and pushed myself to do it better than I’ve done it before.

Again, thanks for reading, and have a fantastic day.

1. I have noticed that even when I am indulging, it’s less than I normally would have before I started trying to make these changes. So, even in my “failures” there are positives.

Accountability – 10/22/14

Yesterday, I did a pretty good job “making up” for Monday. I didn’t eat a ton of food, and what I ate was mostly good…although because I had a good day, I did treat myself to a Kit Kat1 that my wife had surprised me with after she went grocery shopping on Monday night2

This is a pretty short post, because I don’t have a whole lot to write about. I hope you have a fantastic day.

1. Kit Kats are my favorite candy bars. Love them.
2. She’s a good egg. Also, the one good decision I made on Monday was not eating that Kit Kat.

10/21/14 – Accountability

Well, yesterday was not a success…I made some very bad choices in terms of food. The first, and probably silliest, was that I had a bag of Fritos for a snack. At 320 calories, I would’ve been better off eating just about anything. I also didn’t make good decisions at dinner, because I made spaghetti for the family, and it was really, really good…so I had three helpings1

Even though today is an “off day” for my DDP Yoga program, I am going to do some extra cardio to make up for the caloric overload yesterday. This should get me back on track, and make today more of a success than yesterday.

1. Spaghetti is a huge weakness of mine, along with pizza and chesseburgers.
2. These are gross calories. Lose It provides a method for putting the amount of calories burned during exercise into the calculation, but since my heart rate monitor is broken, I don’t have a reliable method for calculating it…so I’m only tracking calories consumed.
