“The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it… I can resist everything but temptation.” – Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite playwrights, and one of the most quotable, even outside of his plays. I don’t necessarily agree with Wilde on the above point, but then he and I lead very different lives…which is okay.

The reason I chose that quote as my prompt for today is because my son started a new job. That may not make sense right now, but it will in a few moments. Bear with me.

My fifteen year old son got a job. Neither my wife nor I told him that he needed to get a job. He expressed interest in going to the Denver stop of the Warped Tour, and I merely told him that I didn’t think we could afford to buy him a ticket. This was, apparently, enough to make him realize that working is how you get money to buy stuff that you want. He sent applications to a few places, and was stymied by a few others that have a policy of not hiring anyone under the age of 16. He did eventually find a place, went to orientation last week, and started training this week.

Because he’s only 15 and doesn’t have a driver’s license or a car, I drove him to work yesterday. I am extremely proud of him for taking the initiative to get himself a job, but this could have negative consequences for me. My son works at McDonald’s.

Those people who know me know that I love McDonald’s. I’ve been eating there since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I own a McDonald’s t-shirt that is one of my favorites. For most of my life, McDonald’s double cheeseburgers were a way of life. Having to go to the place of ultimate temptation to drop my son off is a fantastic test of my self control. When I dropped him off yesterday, I did have a small order of fries and an iced tea, which I had already built into my calorie count.

First trial passed.

Hopefully it will remain as easy as it was yesterday.
