“Sameness is the mother of disgust, variety the cure.” – Petrarch

One of the things that I struggle with when losing weight is trying to find enough different things that I can eat while staying within my daily nutritional goals. I don’t want to eat the same things over and over, and I find myself doing that more than when I’m not paying attention to calories, etc.

I also have this struggle with exercise, especially when I start. I’ve spent the last 14 months getting out of the shape that I was in when I ran my first 5K in March of 2016, so now I can barely do anything that I was doing at the time. Right now, I feel like all I can do is walk (with the occasional few moments of jogging in the middle). Anything more strenuous makes me winded, and frustrates me.

These are challenges that need to be overcome in order to maintain the healthy lifestyle that I’m trying to build for myself.

Guess Who’s Back…Back Again

“I didn’t know you were planning a comeback.”
“I hate that word. It’s a return.” – Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond; Sunset Boulevard

2017 has begun. Yeah…almost 6 months ago.

Here I am, though, and I’m back at trying this weight loss gimmick. Unfortunately, I’ve ballooned way up, and I’ve set a new personal record for my weight. That’s not a good thing, obviously. So…we’re going to try this again.

It’s been about two years since I started my most successful weight loss journey, and I’m going to try and replicate that success. Starting today, I’m going off soda cold turkey, I’m going to try and cut way back on the fast food, and just try to fix the way I eat.

So, look back here on weekdays for my daily accountability and calorie diaries. I’m also considering starting a YouTube vlog to help myself…so look for that in the coming weeks.

Accountability Post – 7/1/15

“Accountability breeds response-ability.” – Stephen Covey

I know, I know, I know.

I haven’t been keeping this updated, and that means that I haven’t been holding myself accountable. As I posted in today’s weigh-in post, I’ve lost another two pounds, over the 16 days since I last weighed in. That’s a good thing, but is also significantly slower than it has been previously. Have I hit the dreaded weight loss plateau? I’m not sure that’s it.

During those 16 days, there have been some changes:

1.) I haven’t been as vigilant about eating meat. I’ve been eating it more often, although not as often as I was before I started.

2.) I’ve just been eating more in general.

3.) I’ve started using the Misfit Shine to track my activity.

I think that numbers two and three are connected, but I’ll get there in a minute.

The first one is completely on me. I’ve been lazy about trying to figure out better ways to eat, and settling for things that weren’t quite as good for me. I’ve been making bad choices when going out with my family1, and making only “okay” choices when I’m by myself. I need to change that, and am confident that I will.

Number two is a little trickier, because of number 3. The Shine tracks my activity, and feeds the information about how many calories I’ve burned over my estimated basal metabolism to MyFitnessPal, which is where I track my caloric intake. I have a feeling that the Shine over estimates a little bit, though, which is why my weight loss has decreased dramatically. Number 2 from above ends up becoming a problem, because I look at what the Shine is telling MyFitnessPal, and I think I have more room to eat a little bit more, and work out a little bit less. That’s problematic. I’ve decided to unlink my Shine from MyFitnessPal and start tracking manually again. We’ll see over the next few weeks if that makes much of a difference.

“Let a man walk ten miles steadily on a hot summer’s day along a dusty English road, and he will soon discover why beer was invented.” – Gilbert K. Chesterton

I may not have walked ten miles, and it may not have been a dusty English road, but after yesterday, I needed a beer. I had the day off from work, so I spent a bunch of time outside working on my lawn. I also walked two miles, and cleaned out our refrigerator, so I treated myself. I went and bought a six pack of Left Hand Brewery’s Milk Stout Nitro. I enjoyed one of those bottles last night while recording Podvocacy.

What’s more interesting is that even with treating myself to a cold beer, I still came in far under my adjusted calorie budget. All of that combined with not having to go to work made for a pretty solid day.

Weekly Accountability – 6/22/15

“We can’t blame the technology when we make mistakes.” – Tim Berners-Lee

For my wedding anniversary, my wife bought me something that is, ostensibly, supposed to help me with losing weight. It’s called a Misfit Shine, and it’s something that she bought for herself a few months ago, and has enjoyed using. Misfit is basically a competitor to FitBit, and the Shine is a small disc shaped fitness tracker that can be worn a number of ways.

I wear it on my wrist as a fitness band, and it does (I think) a pretty good job of tracking activity as well as sleep. As an added bonus, it syncs with MyFitnessPal, and plugs the calories I’ve burned through activity into my MyFitnessPal profile. I’ve been using it for a little less than a week, so I’ve only got a small sample size to work with, but I really enjoy this new technology. I’m looking forward to seeing how accurate it is, and if it will actually help me continue to lose weight.

As far as last week goes, it had its ups and downs. I had a few days where I wasn’t as good as I should have been in terms of calories, and I had a couple of days where I was way under where I should have been. For the week, I was under my calorie budget, but that’s partially because of Saturday, when I didn’t eat very much and worked out twice.

“Every day brings new choices.” – Martha Beck

Unfortunately, the previous day’s choices have a way of haunting you…and yesterday’s choices weren’t great. I was doing pretty well, until dinner. I started craving Popeye’s fried chicken, and I gave into that craving. I worked out pretty hard toward the end of the night, but the Popeye’s shot me in the foot.

I had two pieces of chicken, one biscuit and an order of onion rings. That’s a lot of calories (although, it tasted really good, and it satisfied my craving). While working out to burned a lot of those calories, it wasn’t quite enough. I still ended up over my calorie budget for the day.

What I realized as I was eating that chicken, is that I’ve started back down the road that I was on before I started this journey to get healthier. When I began, I decided that I wasn’t going to eat meat, primarily as a way of keeping out of fast food restaurants. I’ve done pretty well, but this past weekend, plus tonight makes it seem like I’m going in the wrong direction. I now have
to renew my focus and get back to where I was a few weeks ago.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this.
