Guess Who’s Back…Back Again

“I didn’t know you were planning a comeback.”
“I hate that word. It’s a return.” – Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond; Sunset Boulevard

2017 has begun. Yeah…almost 6 months ago.

Here I am, though, and I’m back at trying this weight loss gimmick. Unfortunately, I’ve ballooned way up, and I’ve set a new personal record for my weight. That’s not a good thing, obviously. So…we’re going to try this again.

It’s been about two years since I started my most successful weight loss journey, and I’m going to try and replicate that success. Starting today, I’m going off soda cold turkey, I’m going to try and cut way back on the fast food, and just try to fix the way I eat.

So, look back here on weekdays for my daily accountability and calorie diaries. I’m also considering starting a YouTube vlog to help myself…so look for that in the coming weeks.

Accountability Post – 12/8/16 (Friends)

“It’s nice to just be a kid and hang out with your friends at lunch.” – Karlie Kloss

I’m not sure if I’ve ever written about it on here, but I don’t really like my job. It’s a pretty boring, dead end kinda thing that pays the bills. I have a good schedule, and a decent amount of vacation, which is probably why I’m still here after 14 years.

One of the good things about my job, though, is that I’ve been fortunate enough to make some good friends over the years. And, even though none of them work here anymore, we still try and get together on a regular basis. We grab a lunch here or there, and almost always go see the new Marvel movies together when they come out. Yesterday was one of those lunch days. We usually convene at the Del Taco that’s pretty close to where most of us work, and I’m lucky enough that one of the friends usually buys. There isn’t much better than hanging out with friends having a bite and laughing our way through an hour.

I wouldn’t give those times up for anything, but it means that when I’m trying to lose weight I have to figure out alternatives to what I would normally eat. I love Del Taco, especially because I like the mix of Mexican and American food. You just can’t beat a taco and fries1. I usually have a burger, medium fries, and a crunchy ground beef taco. That’s a total of approximately 1300 calories2. Obviously, I needed to cut back those calories while still being able to enjoy time with my friends…so I skipped the burger, had two carne asada street tacos, and a small order of fries. That cut about 800 calories out of my lunch, and left me room to have a good dinner, while still staying under my calorie goal for the day.

Also, it has now been 13 days since my last soda.

1. Especially crinkle fries. I love crinkle fries.
2. And that doesn’t even include the soda.

Accountability Post – 12/7/16 (Average)

When I write my posts, I usually have a keyword in my head that I can start with. From there I find a quote, and let the quote inform whatever I’m going to write. Unfortunately, I had a hard time coming up with a keyword for today’s post, because yesterday was pretty average.

Hey…I found my keyword.

Except that trying to find a good, usable quote centered around the word “average”, is not that easy.

Anyway, yesterday was pretty average. I stayed right around my calorie count, didn’t exercise, except that we did some cleaning around the house that required me to lift up a few heavy things. I hate trying to lose weight in the winter. I’m a wuss when it comes to extended time in cold weather, and so that is really driving the trouble that I’m having with exercise. If I’m going to do it, I’d prefer to head outside and walk around…but I can’t be out in 14 degree weather for anything more than like 5 minutes before I start to ache. So, it’s about finding stuff around the house to do. I do like spending some time hitting the heavy bag in the basement, and I do get a decent workout, but I have a hard time because I don’t know enough about boxing to try and switch up my routine. At least with running outside, I can change my route every time.

If anyone has any ideas/resources for different heavy bag workouts, drop a comment, or hit me up on twitter.

Accountability – 12/6/16 (Setbacks)

“Setbacks motivate me.” – Lindsey Vonn

I experienced a setback yesterday, which, hopefully, I’ll be motivated by. I ate out of habit, and as such ate terribly. After a good first week, I slid back a little bit, by going to McDonald’s twice in one day. What can I say…it was convenient both times.

There are tiny positives in this. Both times I ate one double cheeseburger and a small order of fries, as opposed to two double cheeseburgers and a large fry. I could’ve done a lot worse. That being said, I really have to be on guard and be better about convincing myself that convenience is not an overwhelming reason to eat something.

Weekly Accountability – 12/5/16 (Exercise)

“A good goal is like a strenuous exercise – it makes you stretch.” – Mary Kay Ash

As far as goals go, I accomplished a few this week. I stayed under my calorie goal for the week as a whole, and I only went over on one day. Even then, I had 1504 calories, when my budget was 1500. I didn’t have any soda, and I drank a decent amount of water. Also, for my first weigh in, I’m down 4 pounds.

Unfortunately, the one place where I fumbled was in exercising. I didn’t do much, if any, this week. Pretty much the only physical activity I was a part of this week was walking around downtown Denver on Saturday morning. My wife and I went to the Denver Art Museum for their free first Saturday. This week, I’m going to make the attempt to fix that. I’m planning on working out at least three times this week for 15 minutes each.

Weigh In – 12/5/16

Actually, I weighed in on Saturday, as will be the case going forward in this attempt at getting healthy. I weighed in at 233 pounds, which is a loss of a little over four pounds.

That’s pretty rapid, but that tends to happen when I change the way I’m eating so drastically. I haven’t had any soda in the past 10 days, and I’ve only had one cheeseburger. I mean…I was on a 4 cheeseburger (at least) a week diet before I decided that that was probably excessive.
