“I’m not into working out. My philosophy: No pain, no pain.” – Carol Leifer

I have been known, throughout my life, to go to far with things. I can become obsessed, and sometimes that has negative consequences. Take, for example, working out. Sometimes I push myself to do things that I’m not ready for, especially since I had so much success the last time, and was able to do things that I hadn’t been able to do before. Now that I’m back to trying, I want to be able to do them again, even though my body is completely different, and I had worked my way up to those things.

For example: last night I hadn’t done my cardio yet, since if I’m going to do it outside, I prefer to wait until the sun has started to set, and it’s gotten a little cooler. I walked one of my normal routes (I have about 4 regular circuits in my area), and walked most of it at pretty good pace, and ran some of it. I ended up doing my first mile in about 13:30. At one point in my training, I had myself down to a 9 minute first mile. Not Earth shattering, but for me that was a huge accomplishment. So, I pushed myself last night, and ended up doing about 4 miles in a little over an hour. That was probably too much too fast, and I’m paying for it this morning. My thighs are burning, my ankles and knees are sore…and I’m sure that sitting at my desk at work for 8 hours probably isn’t going to help matters.

Oh well…c’est la vie.

Accountability Post – 12/7/16 (Average)

When I write my posts, I usually have a keyword in my head that I can start with. From there I find a quote, and let the quote inform whatever I’m going to write. Unfortunately, I had a hard time coming up with a keyword for today’s post, because yesterday was pretty average.

Hey…I found my keyword.

Except that trying to find a good, usable quote centered around the word “average”, is not that easy.

Anyway, yesterday was pretty average. I stayed right around my calorie count, didn’t exercise, except that we did some cleaning around the house that required me to lift up a few heavy things. I hate trying to lose weight in the winter. I’m a wuss when it comes to extended time in cold weather, and so that is really driving the trouble that I’m having with exercise. If I’m going to do it, I’d prefer to head outside and walk around…but I can’t be out in 14 degree weather for anything more than like 5 minutes before I start to ache. So, it’s about finding stuff around the house to do. I do like spending some time hitting the heavy bag in the basement, and I do get a decent workout, but I have a hard time because I don’t know enough about boxing to try and switch up my routine. At least with running outside, I can change my route every time.

If anyone has any ideas/resources for different heavy bag workouts, drop a comment, or hit me up on twitter.

Accountability Post – 7/1/15

“Accountability breeds response-ability.” – Stephen Covey

I know, I know, I know.

I haven’t been keeping this updated, and that means that I haven’t been holding myself accountable. As I posted in today’s weigh-in post, I’ve lost another two pounds, over the 16 days since I last weighed in. That’s a good thing, but is also significantly slower than it has been previously. Have I hit the dreaded weight loss plateau? I’m not sure that’s it.

During those 16 days, there have been some changes:

1.) I haven’t been as vigilant about eating meat. I’ve been eating it more often, although not as often as I was before I started.

2.) I’ve just been eating more in general.

3.) I’ve started using the Misfit Shine to track my activity.

I think that numbers two and three are connected, but I’ll get there in a minute.

The first one is completely on me. I’ve been lazy about trying to figure out better ways to eat, and settling for things that weren’t quite as good for me. I’ve been making bad choices when going out with my family1, and making only “okay” choices when I’m by myself. I need to change that, and am confident that I will.

Number two is a little trickier, because of number 3. The Shine tracks my activity, and feeds the information about how many calories I’ve burned over my estimated basal metabolism to MyFitnessPal, which is where I track my caloric intake. I have a feeling that the Shine over estimates a little bit, though, which is why my weight loss has decreased dramatically. Number 2 from above ends up becoming a problem, because I look at what the Shine is telling MyFitnessPal, and I think I have more room to eat a little bit more, and work out a little bit less. That’s problematic. I’ve decided to unlink my Shine from MyFitnessPal and start tracking manually again. We’ll see over the next few weeks if that makes much of a difference.

Accountablity – 6/11/15

“Let’s face it: fitness is boring. But it’s critical to be extremely dedicated to whatever you decide to take up to achieve a desired result. There’s no way you are going to get there without dedication, which is the key for me.” – Harbhajan Singh

Dedication to getting into shape is something that I haven’t always had. It’s probably why I never end up sticking with any particular program for more than a few months. I think I might be turning a corner, though.

Yesterday was a day where I wasn’t exactly sure how I was going to get my workout in. I did walk on both of my breaks, as I usually do, which is approximately 2 miles combined. However, my podcast partner, Jason and I had scheduled the recording of a special episode of Podvocacy covering the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil for yesterday afternoon. I knew that I wouldn’t have time to work out between the podcast recording and my band’s rehearsal last night. I planned my meals in the morning, and would’ve been fine. The problem was that after I ate dinner, I was still a little bit hungry…and really wanted some more of Pei Wei’s edamame. That put me over my calorie budget for the day, but I figured I could work out after I got home from rehearsal.

When I got home, my wife and I ended up having an almost two hour conversation about some things that went on in her day, and by the time we finished, it was after 11:00. Typically, I would’ve just called it a day and gone to bed. But, I felt like I needed to work out, so I did 30 minutes of dance plus three sets of push ups (10 reps per set) and three sets of squats (15 reps per set).

At the end of it, I was within my calorie budget for the day, and I felt pretty good about what I had accomplished.

Accountability – 5/15/15

At one point yesterday, I thought about writing, but I got caught up doing something else, and the thought passed.

Anyway, I’ve done pretty well for the last couple of days. It’s getting to the point where I’m having to find something to eat at the end of the day just to hit the 1200 calorie recommended minimum.

Wednesday, I started the day with two eggs, a piece of toast and a glass of milk. That was a little under 600 calories, but the rest of the day consisted of two meal replacement shakes (one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon…I was trying something different) and stir fried vegetables for dinner. Those vegetables came out to a whopping 50 calories, so after dinner, I was still sitting at 1103 calories…so I made myself a slice of garlic bread. That worked.

Yesterday was an adventure. There is a new MAD Greens opening up near me, and they were doing a grand opening celebration, and giving away free salads. I thought I’d try and go there for lunch, but, alas, it wasn’t meant to be. There was a line around the building, and I only get half an hour for lunch. So I ran home and heated up some leftover spaghetti. We tried to go to MAD Greens for dinner, but the line was still just as long, so we had salads somewhere else.

At that point, I was only at 944 calories, so I ended up having half a peanut butter sandwich after my wife and I got home from the mall.

I still haven’t had any meat this week, and I think I’m doing pretty okay with that. I also exercised both days, although yesterday was pretty lame, since it was just my wife and I walking around the mall for an hour.

A slow start – 12/2/14

As I wrote last night, I’m back to tracking my calories. And track them yesterday, I did…and I kept tracking them. I may have overdone it a bit, but I was really hungry. I ended up having 2 grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner last night, which was a bad decision.

I’m hoping to make up for that the rest of the week. I am back to exercising, though, which is a good thing. The one thing I worry about now is how my losing weight will affect my costumes for Les Miserables. I should probably try and talk to the costumer about that this weekend.

Here’s the skinny (pun intended…if not exactly applicable) on what happened yesterday:

I also did 30 minutes of straight cardio yesterday, and I’m hoping to get back on the DDP Yoga wagon tomorrow.

Have a great day!
